South African State Theatre: Lighting Technician Internships 2024
South African State Theatre invites South African unemployed graduates to apply for Internship Programme 2022 / 2023.
Internship Location: Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa

Position Available:
- Title: Lighting Technician Intern (x2 positions)
- Contract Period: Six months (Fixed-term)
- Salary: R6000 per month
- Reporting to: Production Manager
Key Performance Areas:
- Participate in production meetings, providing valuable input.
- Offer expert advice on lighting equipment to external clients and productions.
- Proactively resolve any technical problems that arise.
- Maintain and ensure proper handling and care of lighting equipment.
- Conduct daily lamp checks and weekly inspections of moving heads for safety during long runs.
- Complete and sign reports to document inspections.
- Efficiently focus lights according to production requests and ensure they remain focused throughout the production.
- Collaborate with the lighting designer during plotting to achieve efficient lighting setup and meet designer satisfaction.
- Operate lighting desks and cues during rehearsals and performances, ensuring effects equipment is operated as per SM CUES.
- Ensure proper setups and strikes on stage while maintaining consistent lighting plots for each show.
- Keep all work areas clean and safe.
- Adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and other relevant legislation.
- Ensure all safety aspects related to stage lighting are followed, and visiting crew and designers are aware of these requirements.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of all lighting equipment and ensure its proper functioning and safe storage.
Preferred Minimum Education and Experience:
- National Diploma in Performing Arts Technology or equivalent qualification.
- No prior experience required.
- Note: Candidates who have already completed their work integrated learning (internship) should not apply.
Knowledge, Skills, and Critical Competencies:
- Good organizational and time-management skills.
- Computer literacy.
- Strong team player.
- Ability to handle stress and work under pressure.
- Capability to work independently.
